昨日のニュースですが、W3C からの正式な発表として XHTML 2 の策定作業が終了 （年内で期限が切れる XHTML2 Working Group Charter を更新しない） 、以降そのリソースを HTML 5 に集中することが発表されました。

XHTML 2 Working Group Expected to Stop Work End of 2009, W3C to Increase Resources on HTML 5

Today the Director announces that when the XHTML 2 Working Group charter expires as scheduled at the end of 2009, the charter will not be renewed. By doing so, and by increasing resources in the HTML Working Group, W3C hopes to accelerate the progress of HTML 5 and clarify W3C's position regarding the future of HTML. これに伴い、W3C から 「Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the future of XHTML」 （XHTML の今後に関する FAQ） が提供されています。

何となく予想していた通りな展開ではありますが、これで規格が一本化されてブラウザのサポートや HTML 5 の仕様策定自体が加速されるなら歓迎すべき決断と言えるでしょう。

質問されたので追記しておきますと、これによって XHTML 終了とか、そういうことではありませんのでご注意を。XHTML はこれからも普通に使ったらいいと思います。HTML 5 は複数あるマークアップ言語の選択肢の 1つです。用途や要件にあわせて最適なものを選択したらいいと思います。
