鳴り物入りでリリースされた 「Google Analytics」 も、予想以上の人気に一時サービスが不安定になったり、新規アカウントの発行を停止したりと、Google らしからぬ状態になっていますが、自分のサイトへの億単位のアクセスや検索クエリーを日々さばく Google でさえも、対処しきれないトラフィックが生まれるとは、Google Analytics の人気たるや恐るべしです。

そんな折、Google Analytics Team からユーザー向けにメールが。

This is a quick update to address some issues you may be seeing in your Google Analytics account and what we're doing to respond.

簡単に言ったら、現状説明と実施した対策についての報告です。

First, due to extremely high demand, we've temporarily limited the number of new signups as we increase capacity. This allows us to focus on our primary objective--to provide a great user experience for our existing users.

まずは新規ユーザー登録の停止について、既存ユーザーへのサービスレベル確保を優先する為に行いましたよと。その後に現状の対策を説明しています。

1. The 'Check Status' button is being reworked to check for properly installed tracking code. This should be fixed by the end of November.

「Check Status」 機能を修正中。11月中には終わるよと。

2. The '+Add Profile' link has been temporarily removed until we increase capacity. We'll alert all current users when the feature is restored.

「+Add Profile」 機能はしばらく停止。ページ上から消してあるよと。

3. While we increase capacity, you may see longer than normal delays in data showing up in your reports. All data continues to be collected and no data has been lost.

今サーバーを増強中ですが、既存ユーザーに関してはデータは問題なく蓄積されているし、閲覧も出来ますと。データが消えたなんてこともありませんと説明しています。

今回、システムが不安定になるほどサーバーに負荷がかかった原因としては、データ取得用の JavaScript がページに正しく追加されているかを確認する 「Check Status」 機能の仕様から、独自ドメイン以外で運営しているサイトが解析対象 URI にドメインのルートディレクトリしか登録できなかったのが大きいらしいですね。

つまり、とある Blog サービスが 「example.com」 なんていうドメインでサービスを提供していて、各ユーザーはドメインの下にユーザー名でディレクトリを切り、例えば、

http://example.com/username/

なんていう URI で Blog がホストされているような場合、これってよくあるケースだと思いますが、Google Analytics では当初、ドメインのルートディレクトリしか登録できなかった為、同じサービスを使っている人たちがみんなものすごい勢いで

http://example.com/

を解析対象 URI として登録するような事態が起きたことで、確認用ロボットプログラムが同一 URI に集中、サーバーの負荷が膨大になり、ついに障害発生というのが経緯のようです。まさに想定外だったんですね。
