Twitter が公式の開発者向けサイト内で、現在ダイレクトメッセージ （以下、DM） にも適用されている、Twitter の 140文字制限について、これを廃止すると発表しました。
7月から適用され、開発者向けには、それまでに長文 DM をアプリケーション側で受け取るための準備をしておきましょうという案内がされています。
We've done a lot to improve Direct Messages over the past year and have much more exciting work on the horizon. One change coming in July that we want to make you aware of now (and first!) is the removal of the 140 character limit in Direct Messages.

ということで、7月になったら DM から 140文字の制限を排除することをお知らせしますよという内容。
開発者向けには、スムーズに移行できるように API の仕様や長い DM を受け取った場合の UI などについて確認してねという案内がされています。
なお、API 関連では REST API と Streaming API に変更が入っていて、詳細はリンク先に記載されています。
In order to make this change as seamless as possible for you we've included some recommendations below to ensure all your applications and services can handle these longer format messages before we flip the switch.
We recommend taking the following actions in preparation:
- Review the new API additions below.
- Update your GET requests so you will be able to receive the full length of DM text.
- Adjust your app UI to accommodate longer DM text.
最後に下記のような一文が。
You may be wondering what this means for the public side of Twitter. Nothing! Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today.
「この DM に対する変更を聞いて、もしかしたら通常のツイートに関しても制限が外れたりするんじゃね？ と思うかもしれないけど、そんなことは起こらないから期待すんな」 と。
DM は個人的な連絡手段として使っているケースも多々あると思いますので、そこに 140文字なんていう厳しめの文字数制限があるのはさすがに使い勝手が悪いということなんでしょう。
私はあまり DM を使わないのでよくわかりませんが、普段からよく Twitter の DM を使いますよという人には朗報かもしれません。
